Workshop

Mastering the Wave Transition

Reach the peak with less effort, in less time and with far more confidence

The wave transition isn't just a duck dive. It starts long before the wave reaches you: in reading the sea correctly, choosing your exit route, timing, paddling technique and matching the board to the conditions and to your ability.

Many surfers waste most of their energy on the way to the peak. They paddle in the wrong place, exit with imprecise timing or perform a duck dive that doesn't let them pass efficiently under the wave. The result is fatigue, frustration and sometimes giving up on entering the water on more challenging days.

In the workshop we break the wave transition down into stages, film the performance both above and below the water, and work intensively on everything needed to make the way to the peak more efficient and safe.

A skill usually learned through months of trial and error gets two days of learning, filming, analysis and focused practice here.

  • Two days
  • 8 hours of training
  • Underwater filming
  • Accommodation & breakfast

Who is the workshop for?

The workshop is intended for soft-board surfers who want to improve their ability to get through the break zone, and especially for hard-board surfers who struggle to duck dive and reach the peak in changing sea conditions.

The practice is matched to the surfer's level, board type and the equipment they arrive with. If needed we'll work with more suitable equipment, to allow correct and efficient learning of the technique.

Day one

  1. 1

Understanding before we get in the water

We open with a professional session where we'll learn how to read the break zone, identify the right exit route and understand the connection between paddling, timing, positioning and wave-transition technique.

  2. 2

    Practical work and underwater filming

We enter the first session and start working on paddling technique, timing, route selection and passing under the wave. Hard-board surfers will practice the stages of the duck dive, and soft-board surfers will work on techniques suited to their board type. The practice is also filmed underwater, to see exactly what happens with the body and board during the transition.

  3. 3

    Video analysis in the classroom

After the session we return to the classroom and watch the footage. We'll identify where energy is wasted, what's stopping the board from going deep and which changes can make the transition more efficient.

  4. 4

Back to correct in the water

In the second session we return to the water and apply the corrections immediately. Each surfer works on their own focus points, while the performance is still fresh and the understanding from the analysis is clear.

Day two

  1. 1

Paddling and transition in more challenging conditions

We open with a morning session including paddling drills and work on wave transition in more advanced conditions, according to the state of the sea. You learn how to cope even when the sea is high, rough or less predictable, without wasting all your strength on the way out.

  2. 2

Breakfast, analysis and back to the sea

After the session we return to the hotel for breakfast and another analysis of the footage. From there we head to a closing session, where you practice reading the sea, route selection, paddling and the wave transition in real time in the existing conditions.

Two possible formats

Haifa workshop

A two-day weekend at the TRB club in the Domus hotel in Bat Galim, including training, underwater filming, video analysis, accommodation and breakfast.

Special wave-pool format

The workshop is occasionally held in a special format at the wave pool in Tel Aviv. This format doesn't include accommodation, and its details are published separately according to the dates and the pool's operating conditions.
